Zamar Praise

The Hebrew word “Zamar” is often demonstrated in praise and worship services. It means “to touch the strings or a part of a musical instrument; to make music accompanied by voice, hence to celebrate in music and in song.

This is what we can see happening in many Churches today.

There are different dimensions of praise but I will look at the Zamar praise

Although Parise is one word according to the English Language it has many different dimensions according to the Hebrew Language. I want to expound on the Zamar praise.

Zamar can be either a loud or soft music accompanied by singing.

Be thou exalted, Lord, in thine own strength: so, will we sing and praise thy power.

Psalm 21:13

And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore, will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the Lord.

Psalm 27:6

Zamar Praise was what David offered unto the Lord when King Saul was troubled in his Spirit. When we as believers offered Zamar praise there is a sound that precedes the move of God in our lives.

The story can be found in 1Samuel 16:14-23

According to Psalm 71:22 Zamar praise reminds us that God not only loves our verbal praise but also our instrumental praise.

I will also praise (zamar) thee with the psaltery, even thy truth, o my God unto thee will I sing with the harp, o thou Holy One of Israel.

Too often music is substituted for praise and worship in churches. The Congregation will sit down and listen to the musicians and the singers demonstrating Zamar praise but they will fail to get involved themselves. It is important to remember that God is worthy of thanksgiving and adoration. Let us give God what is due without reservation even if it means being clamorously foolish in our worship.

But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him.

15 And Saul’s servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.

16 Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.

17 And Saul said unto his servants, provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.

18 Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the Lord is with him.

19 Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, send me David thy son, which is with the sheep.

20 And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul.

21 And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armour bearer.

22 And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favour in my sight.

23 And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.
