Let Me Be David

The name David is of a Hebrew origin, It means “BELOVED”. In the bible he is one of the most remarkable personalities in scriptures. David has many titles.

He was a shepherd boy

Musician

Poet

Soldier

Statesman

Prophet

King

David was a prolific writer; he wrote about half of the book of Psalms which likely has music composed for them as well. It is interesting to know that he is the only person with the name David in the bible and is mentioned quite often throughout the scriptures.

Saul preceded David as King and had become an antagonist to David. Why did Saul fear David? Saul saw and knew that the Lord was with him, he also knew that David would be the next King to rule Israel and was threatened because he did not want to loose his throne to him. Saul was David’s enemy continually” (1 Sam 18: 12; 28-29). Imagine the king of Israel King Saul fearing David when he had been chosen to be King for that time, but he knew he was not doing right in the eyes of the Lord and also believed that the spirit of the Lord was not with him. Comparing David who was humble and obedient as opposed to Saul who was rebellious and proud he despised David even more and sought to get rid of David every chance he got, always pursuing him, scheming against him, manipulating people he cared about to set traps for him which none of it achieved the result he desired, I think King Saul realized his time as king was coming to an end. It was only a matter of time before David took the throne.

“Saul was afraid of David because the Lord was with him but had departed from Saul.” And Saul saw and knew that the Lord was with David, and that Michal Saul’s daughter loved him. And Saul was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul became David’s enemy continually. 1st Samuel 18:12; 28-29 KJV

We must be careful not to put David in Saul’s Armor. In life we look at our children and grandchildren and think we know exactly how equipped they are to fight the giants they will face in their lives, so we tend to get busy hanging our expectations over their lives, just as Saul tried getting David to put his heavy armor on to go out and fight Goliath. Wise is the child who, like David, can speak up for himself and refuse to put on someone else’s armor when that was not what God wanted for him. He was content with being who God had called him to be. It was as if he was saying Let me be David, let me be me, the person God created me to be.

This can sometimes be difficult for parents ‘After all’ we can argue the fact, what do they know about “war”? We are the experienced ones who have learned a few things about battle, we forget that David was called and chosen for this paricular position.

Yet what mother being in that position wouldn’t be anxious as she watches her child with only five small stone and a sling as he steps out to face a foe who has dwarfed him so many times over; a Giant! Isn’t there another way?, we would probably think to ourself but not necessarily especially if God is directly involved.

The Meaning Of Mother

A woman in relation to her child or children.

Brings up (a child) with care and affection.

Give birth to.

Other Ways Mother Can Be Pronounced

Hebrew word for mother––אימא

Greek word for mother—Μητέρα

American English words for mother are Mom, Mommy, Momma, Mama and Ma.

British English, words for mother are Mum, Mummy” they are usually used instead of Mom and Mommy.

North of England, particularly Yorkshire and Lancashire English word for mother is Mam.

The five small stones can signify to us characteristics in our children that can indeed help them to do battle.

One stone signifies our children’s natural abilities given to them by the omnicient God with their personalities in mind. Was it not David’s prowess with the sling and the stone and the presence of God that brought Goliath down? Was his character the worse for struggling to find his identity as he was constantly treated like a nobody in a house filled with “somebodies”. In today’s society that demonic pattern still continues, unfortunately in the Churches also.

The second stone signifies our children’s own burgeoning faith.

The third is their enthusiasm and incredible potential.

The fourth, their background and heritage, the bane and blessing of their past, which has molded their minds and prepared them for the school of Hard Knocks.

And the fifth small stone what does it represent? perhaps this spiritual gift and calling of God. These are the things the Lord has in mind for your children that would eventually lead them to the place of their appointment, becoming people after God’s own heart!

Let your David be David, and send him out to do the battle in the name of the Lord! you won’t be sorry, but Goliath will be.

Conclusion

King David was the greatest king Israel ever had, but one greater than David is coming, and He will not only reign over Israel, but He will also rule over all the nations. Someday, all who are now in their graves and all those alive at Christ’s coming will acknowledge this King as King of kings and Lord of lords. We don’t know when Jesus will return but we do know that He is coming back, and He desires that none of us should perish from faith in Christ (2 Pet 3:9). That is God’s will for you; that you believe in the Son of God and that you receive eternal life. Has God’s will been fulfilled in your life?

The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 2nd Peter 3:9 KJV
