What is the Holy Spirit? – The Holy spirit is the third person of the trinity, the Triune God manifested as God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit
When preparing to return to His heavenly Father, the Lord Jesus Christ in His farewell, informed the Apostles about the forthcoming descent of the Holy Spirit. He explained to the disciples that the Comforter, is the Holy Spirit, that would come soon to them to fulfil the mission of salvation:
“I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Comforter, to be with you forever, the Spirit of Truth … He will teach you everything and remind you of everything that I say unto you … He, the Spirit of Truth, which proceeds from the Father, will bear witness of Me” John 14: 16-17, 26; 15: 26. AV
Throughout His mission on earth, Jesus promised His Disciples that after His Ascension, He would send the Spirit to them. The Apostles, Mary the mother of Jesus, returned to Jerusalem to wait for the Holy Spirit.
They spent their time in prayer and anticipation. They were all in one accord in one place: They were gathered together sharing the same heart, the same love for God, the same trust in His promise. It was the first “novena”, a common practice of nine days of prayer for a special intention. It was at the end of these nine days on the tenth day the Feast of Pentecost,
The Spirit came, the sound of a rushing mighty wind, filling the whole house with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the disciples and all who were present in the upper room and tongues of fire filling believers with the fire of the Holy Spirit, the disciples were given great gifts to spread the Gospel. Acts 2: 1-4 KJV.
The apostles’ ability to address foreign visitors in their own languages was a miracle from God. After they were filled with the Holy Spirit, the twelve Disciples did many other miracles and wondrous signs. From the commencement of the church, we see that God intended His offer of salvation to extend to all nations. Whoever calls on the name of Jesus, repents, and believes in Him will be saved. Today, 2,000 years later, believers in Jesus are still filled with the power of the Holy Spirit. We cannot live the Christian life without His help. We are to call on Him whenever we need strength or guidance.
After the Day of the Pentecost
After the events of outrage, death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ, which the Apostles took deeply to their hearts, they became quite different people. They grew stronger spiritually and matured to accept the gifts of the Holy Spirit. An example of the Holy Spirit power is written in Acts 2 the book reminds us of when Peter was frighten by a maid and a few days later the same man is as bold as a lion. It was then that God’s mercy came to them in its fullness and they were the first to enjoy the spiritual fruits.
The book of Acts 2 tells the story of the outcome of Pentecost’s new creation: people witness in word and in deed to the risen Christ. Frank Bartleman is a modern-day witness of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit; He was gripped by the Holy Spirit and followed the instructions of the Holy Spirit and the “Fire fell on Azusa Street”.
And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place Acts 2:1 KJV
From the outset, the new-born church immediately plunged out into the streets to witness to God’s mighty works in the languages of people all over the world. By the end of the story, a tiny, Spirit-filled community of faith that broke from its present order has spread across the continents with incredible power to bring new things into being. With the gift of the Spirit, all things are possible.
Therefore, on the Day of Pentecost, we celebrate God’s gift of Holy Spirit which draws us together as one people, helps us to comprehend what God is doing in the world, and empowers us to announce, in word and in deed, God’s plan of “reconciling all people in the name of Christ,
That in the dispensation of the fullness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him: Ephesians 1: 10.KJV
This event brought into existence the Church of Christ and gave rise to the Christian faith on earth. The Holy Spirit renews us in baptism through His Godhead, which He shares with the Father and the Son. Finding us in a state of deformity, the Spirit restores our original beauty and fills us with His grace, leaving no room for anything unworthy of our love. The Spirit frees us from sin and death, and changes us from the earthly humans we were, men of dust and ashes, into spiritual humans, sharers in the divine glory, sons and heirs of God the Father who bear a likeness to the Son and are his co-heirs and brothers and sisters, destined to reign with him and to share his glory. In place of earth the Spirit reopens heaven to us and gladly admits us into paradise, giving us even now greater honour than the angels, and by the holy waters of baptism extinguishing the unquenchable fires of hell.
Conclusion
The Holy Spirit renews us in baptism through his godhead, which he shares with the Father and the Son. Finding us in a state of deformity, the Spirit restores our original beauty and fills us with his grace, leaving no room for anything unworthy of our love. The Spirit frees us from sin and death, and changes us from the earthly humans we are, men of dust and ashes, into spiritual humans, sharers in the divine glory.
We need the Holy Spirit to perfect and renew us, for spiritual fire can cleanse us, and spiritual water can recast us as in a furnace and make us into new men and women. The Holy Spirit also reopens heaven to us where we are gladly received into the paradise.
