Can You Know God

Phiolophsy View Of Can You Know God

God is known through his actions, through the things that he does, and through examples of Special Revelation, as God acts in the world. Many theologians have argued that we cannot know anything about the essence of God, but we can learn about his actions because it is through his actions that we encounter him.

Biblical View of Can You Know God

Therefore, because of God's mercy, I urge you, brothers and sisters, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship ( Romans 12:1 NIV).

When we speak of knowing God, it is important to understand that we are not talking about abstract or speculative thoughts concerning God or mystical experiences but about coming alive to God through Jesus Christ and surrendering ourselves to Him in grateful love. As John says, “Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life” (1 John 5:12).

Can You Know God

The question "Can you know God?" has been asked by many people throughout history. For those who follow the Bible, this is an essential question. The Bible, revered as the sacred scripture of Christianity, offers a wealth of insights and directions on the pursuit of knowing God. This article delves into the biblical narrative to uncover how one can truly know God, the pathways to deepening this divine acquaintance, and the essence of fostering a relationship with the Almighty God.

We must also understand that knowing God is not an optional part of the Christian life; it is the Christian life. Jesus said, “And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent” (John 17:3). The English word known in this verse is a translation of the Greek word ginosko, which, in this context, means an experiential knowing, not simply an intellectual understanding of facts about Jesus or the Bible. In other words, it refers to an “I-Thou” relationship.

This relationship begins when we come alive to God -- in other words, by grace, we are awakened from the state of spiritual death into which everyone is born and receive the eternal life Jesus offers to those who trust in Him for salvation. The first part, recognizing and turning from our sins, is repentance; the second part, trusting in Jesus and His atoning death on the cross to forgive our sins, is faith. Coming alive to God requires both. Jesus described this as being born with the Holy Spirit. It means birth into God’s family and entrance into His kingdom (John 3:3–8). Without rebirth by the Holy Spirit, a person cannot see, perceive, understand, or know God or His kingdom.

That, I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death. Philippians 3:10 NIV

What Does It Mean to Know God?

Having a relationship with God means understanding who He is, being aware of His presence, and being aware of His presence. Knowing facts about God is not enough; we must also have a personal relationship with him. In the Bible, knowing God is described as having a close and intimate relationship, much like that between a parent and child.

How Can We Know God?

Through Creation

The Bible tells us that we can know God through the world He created. Romans 1:20, says, "For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities, his eternal power and divine nature, have been seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse." As a result, we can see evidence of God’s existence and power by looking at nature and creation.

Through the Bible

The Bible itself is a primary way to know God. It is considered God’s word and contains His teachings, commandments, and stories of how He has interacted with people throughout history. 2nd Timothy 3:16-17, says, "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." By reading the Bible, we learn about God’s character, His love, His justice, and His plan for humanity.

Through Jesus Christ

Christians believe that the best way to know God is through His son, Jesus Christ. Jesus is described as the exact representation of God. In John 14:9, Jesus says, "Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father." By studying the life and teachings of Jesus, we can understand who God is and what He desires from us.

What Does the Bible Say About Knowing God?

Old Testament Teaching: Knowing God is often connected with following His commandments and living a righteous life. Deuteronomy 6:5, says, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength." This commandment emphasizes the importance of loving God fully and following His ways.

The prophets in the Old Testament also spoke about knowing God. Jeremiah 9:23-24, says, "Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight." declares the LORD. Jeremiah highlighted that knowing God is more important than worldly achievements, and true wisdom and strength come from understanding and knowing God, recognizing His attributes, and building that personal connection with Him.

New Testament Teachings: The focus on knowing God is closely tied to the teachings of Jesus. John 17:3, Jesus says, "Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent." The Apostle John, also known as Saint John, was one of the twelve Apostles of Jesus. He witnessed several key events in Jesus’ ministry, including the Transfiguration and the Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. John suggests that knowing God is essential for eternal life. He was not only a follower of Jesus but also had a personal relationship with God.

The apostle Paul also wrote about knowing God. Philippians 3:8, says, "What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ." Paul emphasizes that knowing Christ is more valuable than anything else in life

The Importance of Faith

Knowing God requires faith. Hebrews 11:6 says, "And without faith, it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him." Faith is trusting in God even when we cannot see Him. It is believing in His promises and His character.

Prayer and Worship

Another way to know God is through prayer and worship. Prayer is communicating with God, expressing our thoughts, desires, and gratitude. Philippians 4:6-7, says, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Through prayer, we can draw closer to God and experience His peace.

Worship is also a way to know God. It includes prayers, songs, and ceremonies that help people feel connected spiritually. Worship can be done alone or with others and comes in many forms, bringing people together in their faith. Psalm 95:6-7, says, "Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker; for he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care." Worshiping God helps us to recognize His greatness and our dependence on Him.

The Role of the Holy Spirit

Christians believe that the Holy Spirit helps us to know God. The Holy Spirit is God’s presence within us, guiding and teaching us. John 14:26, Jesus says, "But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have said to you." The Holy Spirit helps us understand the Bible, how to pray and to live according to God’s will.

Living a Life that Reflects Knowing God

Knowing God should transform the way we live. It should lead to a life of love, compassion, and righteousness. 1 John 4:7-8, says, "Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love." knowing God means living a life of love.

Micah 6:8, says, "He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." Knowing God should lead to actions that reflect His character.

Challenges in Knowing God

There can be challenges in knowing God. Sometimes, life difficulties can make us doubt God’s presence or goodness. In times of suffering, we might question if God is there. However, the Bible encourages us to trust God even in difficult times. Romans 8:28, says, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." This verse reassures us that God is at work in every situation, even when we don't understand His plans.

Seeking God in Difficult Times

During difficult times, seeking God becomes crucial. The Bible is full of examples of people who turned to God in their struggles and found comfort and strength. The Psalms, for instance, are filled with prayers and songs that express deep emotions, including despair and hope. Psalm 34:18 says, "The Lord is close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." This shows that God is near us when we are hurting and offers His support.

Job, a character in the Old Testament, faced immense suffering but remained faithful to God. Despite losing everything, Job said. Job 19:25, "I know that my Redeemer lives and that in the end he will stand on the earth." Job’s faith in God’s goodness and justice sustained him through his trials.

The Role of Community

Knowing God is not a journey meant to be travelled alone. The community of believers, or the Church, plays a significant role in helping individuals grow in their knowledge of God. Hebrews 10:24-25, it says, "And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching."

Being part of a community provides support, encouragement, and accountability. It allows believers to learn from each other, share their experiences, and grow together.

in their faith. Acts 2:42 describes the early Christian community: "They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and prayer." This highlights the importance of communal worship, teaching, and prayer.

Growth in Knowledge and Understanding

Knowing God is a continuous journey. It is not something that happens overnight but develops over time. The Bible encourages believers to grow in their knowledge and understanding of God. In Colossians 1:10, Paul prays, "so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God."

This growth happens through regular study of the Bible, prayer, worship, and living out God’s commandments. It also involves being open to learning and being taught by others who are more mature in their faith.

Knowing God and Obedience

A crucial aspect of knowing God is obedience. Jesus emphasized the importance of obeying God’s commandments as a sign of knowing and loving Him. John 14:15, Jesus says, "If you love me, keep my commands." Obedience to God’s word is a demonstration of our relationship with Him.

In the Old Testament, the story of Abraham illustrates obedience. God called Abraham to leave his home and go to a land that He would show him. Abraham obeyed, demonstrating his trust and knowledge of God. His obedience was counted to him as righteousness (Genesis 15:6).

The Reward of Knowing God

Knowing God brings many rewards, both in this life and in the life to come. This life brings peace, purpose, and a sense of belonging. Philippians 4:7 speaks of "the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." This peace comes from knowing God and trusting in His plans.

In the life to come, knowing God promises eternal life. 1 John 5:11-12, says, "And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life." Eternal life is the ultimate reward for those who know and follow God.

Obstacles to Knowing God

Some obstacles can hinder our relationship with God. Sin, doubt, and distractions can all come between us and God. Sin separates us from God, but through Jesus, we have the promise of forgiveness. 1 John 1:9 says, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us of our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."

Doubt can also be a significant obstacle. Doubt is not necessarily wrong, but it needs to be addressed. The Bible encourages us to seek answers and to grow in our faith. In Mark 9:24, a man says to Jesus, "I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!" This shows that it is okay to ask for help in dealing with doubt.

Distractions from everyday life can also pull us away from God. We live in a busy world with many demands on our time and attention. Setting aside time for God, prioritizing Him, and being intentional about our relationship with Him can help overcome these distractions. Matthew 6:33, Jesus says, "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."

Practical Steps to Know Jesus Better

1. Read the Bible Daily: Spend time each day reading and meditating on God’s word. Start with the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) to learn about the life and teachings of Jesus.

2. Pray Regularly: Make prayer a regular part of your daily routine. Talk to God, share your thoughts and concerns, and listen for His guidance.

3. Join a Community: Be an active part of a church or fellowship group. Engage in communal worship, study, and service.

It involves faith, obedience, prayer, and community. While there are challenges and obstacles, the journey of knowing God is deeply rewarding, bringing us peace, purpose, and eternal life.

By seeking God through creation, Scripture, and the life of Jesus Christ, we can grow in our understanding and relationship with Him. As we journey through life, let us strive to know God more deeply and live out our faith with love and compassion.
