Can the Bible be understood? Yes it can be, as believers all we need to do is ask the Holy spirit for directions and to impart wisdom, knowledge and understanding. There were times when Christian churches did not allow the congregation to read the Bible. The clergy was the only person who had access to copies of God’s Word. It was believed that only the learned and more educated were able to understand the Bible. However, this reasoning is not in accordance with the Bible.
The first basic rule for knowledge or truth.
If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself. John 7:17 KJV.
So to understand the bible we must study the scriptures and daily meditate on His words. We also need to study the bible diligently with a sincere desire to know and practice truth.
What is truth?
Truth can be defined as conformity with facts or reality, or a verified indisputable fact.
Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. John 17:17 KJV
We should accept the bible as God’s voice to us in doing so He will direct us in the way to be true to ourselves and to walk in the right path.
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. John 10: 27-28 KJV
For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe 1st Thessalonians 2:13 KJV
Can we find truth on a particular subject in the Bible
Whom shall he teach knowledge and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts. For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little: Isaiah 28:9-10 KJV
Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 1st Corinthians 2:13-14 KJV
In these verses we can clearly see that the bible itself is the evidence of truth. From reading one key scripture we can unlock the meaning of many other scriptures or similar scriptures in the bible.
Conclusion The good news is that when we study the scriptures we discover that the bible can be understood. Various Bible authors who have written on the same or similar subjects/events enables us to compare and ” connect the dots”. This is pretty much like putting pieces of puzzles together. Occasionally, in order for us to gain understanding of the Bible’s teaching on a given subject we can sometimes gather information from various different reputable Christian authors outside biblical ones who have written on the same subject matter. Read and be blessed have a great day.
